ARTIST STATEMENT

An independent artist with an MFA from Yale Drama, and twenty years of professional experience in television, film and theater,  I have made the first episode of Lemon Shark (made possible by a grant from the Knight Foundation) which I wrote, produced, directed, acted in and filmed in my hometown, St.Paul, Minnesota.

Prior indie work: I co-produced, wrote and starred in the award winning feature film Blood Stripe (winner of LAFF Jury Prize) of Kenneth Turan, former chief critic of the LATimes, said this:

Made with passion, integrity and skill, “Blood Stripe” is American independent filmmaking at its most effective. It takes on a difficult subject and treats it with an honesty that can’t help but capture us from start to finish.

I craft stories about real people in real situations, subverting gender stereotypes, carefully avoiding exploitation of the subject matter; stories that provoke conversation, broaden perspective, enhance understanding. Lemon Shark is about endangerment, centered around a public elementary school teacher in the midwest. Blood Stripe is about a female veteran’s fight to return home after multiple tours in Iraq.

I create high quality work with efficiency and economy, serving my local community and contributing to the cultural conversation.
